Purpose:
- NEET is conducted to streamline the admission process for undergraduate medical and dental courses across India.
- It replaced multiple entrance exams previously conducted by various states and institutions.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Candidates must be Indian citizens or Overseas Citizens of India (OCI).
- They should be at least 17 years old at the time of admission or will complete that age on or before December 31 of the year of admission.
- Candidates should have completed their 10+2 education with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects.
Exam Pattern (As of 2023):
- NEET is a pen-and-paper-based exam (offline mode).
- The paper consists of 180 multiple-choice questions.
- The subjects covered are Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany and Zoology).
- Each correct answer earns four marks, while one mark is deducted for each incorrect answer.
- The duration of the exam is three hours.
Syllabus:
- The syllabus for NEET is based on the common syllabus prescribed by the National Medical Council (NMC).
- It includes topics covered in the 11th and 12th standards.
Admission Process:
- Based on NEET scores, students can apply for admission to MBBS and BDS courses in medical colleges across India.
- Counselling for All India Quota (AIQ) and State Quota seats is conducted separately.
- Counselling includes choices filling, seat allotment, document verification, and fee payment.
Important Dates:
- NEET is typically held once a year. The schedule includes application dates, admit card release, exam date, and result declaration.
NEET UG and NEET PG:
- NEET UG is for undergraduate courses (MBBS/BDS), while NEET PG is for postgraduate courses.
- NEET PG is for admission to MD/MS and PG Diploma courses.
Role of NTA (National Testing Agency):
- The National Testing Agency is responsible for conducting NEET and declaring results.
